Hydraulic Fluid
The hydraulic fluid has many purposes, including the principal one of power transmission by transferring forces from one location to another. It provides lubrication of the internal surfaces; its cleanliness is important as abrasive particles in the oil can lead to undue wear of the system. The hydraulic fluid also acts as a sealant and coolant. Hydraulic fluids can be used up to about 82C (180F), although cooling is recommended for temperatures above 70C (160F). Air coolers consist of tubing with metal fins to increase the surface area. Water coolers use cold water to conduct heat from the hydraulic fluid.
Two important criteria for hydraulic fluid are its viscosity and the amount and type of additives in it. Additives include antiwear chemicals, corrosion inhibitors, and antioxidants. The viscosity is important to maintain a thin layer of fluid on surfaces to avoid wear. When fluid is used at higher temperatures, it must be more viscous. The viscosity index is a measure of how the viscosity changes with temperature; the higher the index, the smaller is the change in viscosity with temperature. The pour point is the lowest temperature at which a fluid will flow (rapidly enough to pour) under its own weight.
